Green Gardens
Our client bought this Fischer Spec. Home in 2012 wanting to have the landscape compliment the American Four-Square architecture. We used the grade change in the yard to implement a 15” semi dry stacked stone accent wall to create a courtyard leading into the front porch. A simple paver was used to walk was used to create a two-entry point walkway. A concrete bird bath, black aluminum planters and wrought iron urns are used to enhance the period architecture. Simple the plantings were simple hedges with flowering shrubs and perennials to provide seasonal color. Nepeta, spriraea, Pyramidal boxwood, May Nights Salvia and Caramel Coral Bell create a beautiful year-round display enhanced with seasonal displays in the urns making this transformation complete.
The owners wanted to create a resort like outdoor space in the backyard. The actual yard is quite small at 65’x 67’ but appears much larger through the placement of key plants to block off site elements while taking advantage of borrowed scenery from a large common space adjacent to the home. This was achieved by creating 3 distinct outdoor rooms each utilizing the slope of the yard to create a dramatic but simple ensemble. All vantage points of the yard focus on a three-tiered water feature. The first space closest to the home is a 20’ x12’ patio with outdoor dining, a bar and grilling area. This steps down to a curvilinear walk leading to a12’x12’ pavilion with a sitting area. It also leads on the opposite of the yard to a 15 ft. Diameter patio with a gas fire pit . The upper spaces are connected by a natural Lannon Stone wall as is the sitting wall around the fire pit area, tying the materials to the weathered limestone used in the water feature.
The plantings consist of Plants that will provide seasonal color year-round. Two River Birch and 2 Redbud are strategically sited to block a community clubhouse and its amenities and direct one’s eye to the large open space beyond. A mixture of Boxwood hedges, Newport and Juddi Viburnum, Spilled Wine Weigela, Limemound Spiraea, Catmint, Beven’s Geranium, Creeping Jenny and Mazus as well as palm trees in decorative planters help to make this oasis one to remember!
