Asian-Inspired

CHALLENGE
Mr. & Mrs.  Arnold have lived in their Springboro residence for 25 years.  They recently added a pool in their backyard and were looking to upgrade their existing landscape, utilizing as much existing plant material as possible.  The clients are in their 80’s and looking for a lower maintenance, Asian-inspired landscaping to enhance the curb appeal of their home, while blending with the laidback, artsy vibe of their backyard.  The Arnold’s wanted a proposal breaking up the project into 4 potential phases.  The Front, West Side, Pool Exterior, Property Perimeter.  Their initial budget was 20K-25K.

FRONT:
These photos are of the front of the house with several large existing plants that were incorporated into the design to give it a more established feel.

SOLUTION FRONT:
In order to create an Asian / Contemporary feel, without appearing kitschy, I introduced simple elements such as rocks, cobblestone, planters, and an interesting plant palette.
Some of the plants include Styrax, Evening Light, Japanese Wood Grass, Carex Everillo, Japanese Maple, and a Prostrate Blue Spruce.
The homeowner is adding his own lighting to add more dimension to the evening landscape (sorry Jason!)

SIDE & PERIMETER
These two areas were the most important to the clients, as they primarily use their garage door as their main entrance for themselves and guests.
Access to the pool area was constricted and the homeowners wanted to screen the bathroom window from the street on the side of the house as well as screen the AC units.

SOLUTION SIDE & PERIMETER:
We enhanced the flow from the front to the back through the use of large natural flagstone steppers.  This gave us the opportunity to take the eye away from the utilities and create a sense of wonder as you round the corner to the back.
A Forest Pansy Redbud was placed to help screen the neighbors view as well as the bathroom window from the street and along the pathway.
