This client contacted us because they were interested in upgrading their back garden. Tucked behind connecting homes, the existing landscape was a bramble of ground cover and failing shrubs that covered up some usable perennials, including a good number of hellebores. They preferred to see some seasonal interest with a mix of colors and textures rather than the two-dimensional green-only view from their sunroom and back deck. To achieve more interest, we planned on three focal points-two “stone sculptures” flanking a dwarf weeping cutleaf Japanese maple as the centerpiece. The site is dominated by mature trees, shading the hidden garden, so larger shrubs with low-light tolerance were used at the edges to enhance privacy. Plants with different heights and textures, along with variegated or yellow foliage were used to lighten up areas and provide contrast, as a remedy to the flat green view that existed before. The result is a hidden garden that the client can enjoy without even going outside
