Good Sam

The Good Samaritan Trail
As an homage to the old Good Samaritan Hospital, we were asked to create a series of connected gardens incorporating plants, materials and elements from the original site to be transported and re-purposed at a more modern facility.
While the work is to be completed in phases, the original design consists of 5 garden areas interconnected by a trail encompassing most of the campus.  Two of these garden areas are completed.

Location:

Englewood, Ohio

Date Completed

Completed 2019-2023

The Aull Garden
A bronze sculpture depicting the good Samaritan, original pavers and a water feature from the Aull garden at Good Sam were transported to the new site and installed in a meandering path garden with a mix of trees, shrubs and perennials intended to re-create the feel of the original garden.  A natural stone wall was constructed at the edge of a small hillside to create a seating area and maximize space in the garden.  Large trees were installed to shade the area and create a sense of privacy.  The result is a space that promotes movement and can be considered the start (or the end) of the Good Samaritan Trail.

The Employee Plaza
A plaque from the original Aull Garden at Good Sam found a new home on a freshly constructed brick wall at the Employee Plaza.  Utilizing the strong axis of an existing staircase, the Employee Plaza was designed as a place for visitors to gather and relax in the middle of a shift or a busy workweek.  Large planters with Carolina hornbeams are placed symmetrically throughout the plaza, eventually providing shade for the tables and benches below.  Stepping down from the main plaza, two larger planters are seating height, with Kentucky coffee trees to provide shade.  The newly constructed wall with the plaque from the original Aull Garden is the centerpiece of this secondary axis, with the wall surrounded by plantings intended to enclose the space.  The original design includes an additional sculpture (not yet installed) of the good Samaritan embarking on his journey.
